The Atlas Institute for Veterans and Families (formerly the Centre of Excellence on PTSD) is a national organization dedicated to improving the mental health and well-being of Canada’s Veterans and their Families. Funded by Veterans Affairs Canada, the Institute bridges the gap between research and practice to ensure that those who served have access to the best possible evidence-based care.
Core Functions & Services:
- Research & Innovation: Conducts and funds research specifically tailored to the Canadian military and Veteran context. Key areas of study include PTSD, moral injury, military sexual trauma (MST), and the unique health needs of women Veterans.
- Knowledge Sharing: Translates complex research into accessible resources for Veterans, Families, and service providers. This includes the Knowledge Hub, podcasts, and evidence-based toolkits.
- Service Directory: While not a direct clinical service provider, Atlas maintains a comprehensive directory of external mental health supports and care options across Canada.
- Community Engagement: Actively involves Veterans and their Families in the research process through its “Engaging with Veterans and Families Network,” ensuring that lived experience drives their priorities.
- Policy Advocacy: Works with government and stakeholders to inform public policy and improve the structural delivery of mental health services.
- Stigma Reduction: Aims to normalize conversations around Veteran mental health and reduce the stigma associated with seeking help.
